Breakfast is the most
important meal of the day, wouldn’t you want to start it in the best possible way with the best tasting meal? With that thought in mind, the dynamic duo started
a quest to find the best breakfast buns amongst the bakeries in Klang valley, we
scoured popular bakeries in the Klang valley and sampled 6 buns. The breakfast
buns were sampled randomly based on convenience as we transverse Klang valley
in search for the next good meal.
The buns were judged based on
the following criteria:
- Freshness
- Softness or plumpness
- Taste
- Can it be eaten alone without any additional butter or jam? Probably the most important criteria because breakfast buns often need to be eaten on-the-go.
- Price range between RM 4 – 6 for about 4 – 6 buns
The second sample was the Cross
Buns from Breadstory bakery. The one sampled was from the Sunway Velocity
branch, but there are Breadstory bakeries sprinkled across the Klang Valley. The
Cross Buns from Breadstory scored high in terms of freshness and plumpness. The
taste of the buns alone was good with a milky buttery flavour and raisins. The
buns can definitely be eaten on its own, but addition of some butter or cream
cheese would have enhanced the taste even more. The Cross Buns from Breadstory
were one of the buns at the lower price range going at RM4.70 for 4 buns.
The third sample was a bun
from a neighbourhood bakery called The Cake Shop in Taman Midah. The buns from
The Cake Shop were fresh, but the softness of the bun was lacking. As
demonstrated by the photo, the pressed indentation did not bounce back or
disappear as compared to the others (see below). In terms of taste, it was quite
a plain bun and needs to be eaten with additional butter or jam. But its price was within the range costing about RM 4+ for 4 buns.
The fourth sample was the mini
brioche bun from Lavender bakery in Mid valley. The mini brioche buns from
Lavender were very fresh and very soft (as shown in photo below, plumpness
scale was off the charts as indentation on the bun actually bounced back!). In
terms of taste these mini brioche buns from Lavender were buttery and soft, but
as advertised it would probably taste better with addition of ham and cheese.
Price was within the range with cost of RM 5.50 for 4 buns.
Indentation (plumpness test) |
Indentation disappeared ! |
The fifth sample was the
raisin and walnut bun from Komugi in My Town, Cheras. These buns were fresh and
very soft (passing the plumpness test with flying colours). However, the taste
of these buns from Komugi were a bit plain and dry. Definitely needs some
butter or jam to make it palatable. The price was still within the range
costing RM 5.90 for 5 buns.
The last sample was the breakfast
buns from Jason Foodhall in Bangsar Shopping Complex. In terms of freshness it
was OK but in terms of plumpness it rated pretty low (as shown in the photo the
indentations did not bounce back). In addition, these breakfast buns from Jason
bakery tasted a bit plain and really could not be eaten on its own. Its price
also exceeds the range costing RM 6.50 for the 6 buns.
TO
CONCLUDE the battle of the breakfast buns the winner goes to the Hokkaido
Bread from Shokupan, and coming in a very close second is the Cross Buns from
Breadstory. At third place is the mini brioche buns from Lavender bakery. The
fourth placing goes to the raisin and walnut bun from Komugi. And wrapping up
at the bottom of ladder are the breakfast buns from Jason Foodhall and The Cake shop
because of low ratings in terms of plumpness, taste or price. And there you
have it the best breakfast buns in the Klang Valley!
