Best café in Seremban uptown

The verdict is out. The best café in Seremban uptown S2 according to these carefully selected criterias:
1.     Connectivity of wifi (it has to be free and unlimited)
2.    Food and drinks
3.    Ambience
4.      Price and Freebies (because we are Malaysians!)
5.      Service
Whale Time Café
Wifi was good, free and unlimited. Food was however only average, even a bit below average. However, they have a wide selection of gourmet teas to choose from. Ambience was good and quiet, with the color scheme of the whole place being relaxing and welcoming. Prices were slightly higher than the others around though. Service was good with free refill of hot water for your tea even before being asked. There have some sort of system to collect stamps for discounts.

Coffeeholic
Its nearby rival Coffeeholic scores high too in terms of wifi connectivity, free and unlimited. Food and drinks were also on the average side but probably better than Whale Time Café – the croissant I tried was very buttery but not crispy enough and the fillings were pretty rough. The salad was very refreshing with some sort of lime dressing added, but portions were rather small. Drinks were your normal fare. Ambience for me was too dark, added with the old antiques placed around it was a bit spooky for me. Price was your average café price but at times you can have special offers through redeeming points from city explorer app. Service was always fast and efficient, they even offered to send me to my car with an umbrella when it was raining!

Chars
To be honest did not spend a lot time in Chars. But from my limited experience it had good wifi connectivity, free and unlimited. The drink selection had something rather unusual – a selection of oriental drinks like ginger tea and other health tea. The cake that we tried that day was really average (even a bit below). The whole ambience of the café was really too dark with most of its chairs and tables also being dark in color. You really had to sit near a window to get some light. Price was your usual café price, no known freebies. Service was also nothing exceptional during our visit.

Muffin House and Good Fortune Café
I have joined these two adjacent cafes because they are actually owned by the same boss, though not widely and officially known. The Muffin House is a bit of oddity dont expect to find muffins served here but it does serve more western food fare, while Good Fortune Kopitiam serves more oriental food. You can actually sit at one café and order off the menu of the other café. How cool is that eh? You can have your milk tea with a croissant! Has good wifi (free and unlimited). The food that we tried was above average – the teriyaki chicken rice and onsen egg was very tasty and the croissant was crispy but unfortunately not as buttery as Coffeeholic. The waffles however was a dissappointment. They have the widest range of food and drinks you can select from among all the cafes. The cakes we ordered were pretty unusual with just the right amount of buttery taste and berries to make it not too rich and filling, but some of the other cakes were below average being too dry. Ambience of Muffin House is not great but comfortable and probably the busiest (most noisy) of the cafes, for Bruno Mars fans a selection of his songs are often aired here too. Good Fortune café uses the old-style marble stools which does not sit too well if you are there for a long time. Prices probably a bit cheaper than those around especially on the drinks. And the milk tea is one of my favorites, milky smooth. There also have some oriental tea like red date tea for the non-caffeine lovers. Probably the coolest thing is that they give out cash vouchers on-off that has limited restrictions on use – you can order a RM 7 drink and pay RM 6 with vouchers. Instant gratification! Way better than deals on city explorer. Service is good, fast and friendly.

Coffee and Dreams
Has good connectivity of wifi (free and unlimited). Food was above average for some items on the menu, but not all. Especially worth mentioning is the all-day breakfast set that came with salad sprinkled with nice almond chips and cranberries, not your usual fare. The cake that we tried was really average (even a bit below). Drinks were also average. Price wise, the whole breakfast set was RM 13 which you really cannot get in cafes in KL. Drinks and cake were your average café price. There do have some sort of app for discounts similar to city explorer. Ambience was OK with comfortable chairs and tables. Service was usually quite good and friendly though if you are there early, the staff maybe more interested in eating their breakfast than in serving you (it could be my one isolated experience I don't know)

Just Koffea
Has good connectivity of wifi (free and unlimited) though it was a bit slow on one of the days. Food was good for some, but disappointing for others. The walnut cake was really a winner – moist and rich with a full walnut on each slice. However, the croissant was a disappointment with the croissant crust being soggy. The ambience is good with cute teddy bears around and eclectic deco colors. If you are lucky you may even be treated to chart-topping canto pop classics while sipping your tea. Price is your average café price, but they have tea time specials where you can get a tea and cake set for RM13++ , also some other promotions at other times so look out for those. Service is OK things come when they should but nothing extraordinary.

Final Verdict
A very hard call, depends really what you are looking for to eat and experience. But for all-rounder that scored pretty well on all the criteria the title has to go to Muffin House and Good Fortune Café.

Restaurant Yoong Kee @ Gohtong Jaya, Genting

For those uninitiated, there is a spanking new premium shopping outlet in Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highland opened just recently, which would appease the appetite of any shopaholic. But we would now like to talk of appeasing another type of appetite. En route to this shopping outlet is a row of shops with lots of restaurant in Gohtong Jaya, and amongst these shops is a hidden gem – Restaurant Yoong Kee.  Is this one of the best food in Gohtong jaya?   We were there for both lunch and dinner because yes! You just cannot get enough of the good food. For lunch we ordered the “Wat Tan Hor” (Kuey Teow Noodles in egg gravy) and the fried bee hoon with white bait. Both dishes were excellent. The “Wat Tan Hor” was very aromatic with wok hei and juicy prawns. But for me, the fried bee hoon with white bait at Restaurant Yoong Kee took the crown. Spot on in taste with just the right amount of saltiness and crunch with every bite of the tiny white bait. The total bill came up to RM 27 for a me

Char Siew Yoong @ Cheras

One of hubster’s favourite joints, and finally I get to have a try at it! Restaurant Char Siew Yoong is one of those places that are really off the beaten track, its closest landmark would probably be behind PGRM building in Cheras. It is famous for its char siew (bbq pork) and siew yoke (roasted pork belly). Char Siew Yoong is like your typical kopitiam – noisy and crowded, you need to overlook that for the great food that is about to follow.    The queue for take-away We ordered the char siew and siew yoke rice with a soup and vegetable on the side. The char siew was marinated to perfection, probably one of the best char siew I have eaten in KL. The best part of it is the char siew meat, with just enough fat sandwiched between the lean to make it juicy and it really brings out the flavourful taste. No wonder this restaurant’s name is “Char Siew Yoong” this is their ultimate number 1 dish. The siew yoke for me was just as nice, though hubster is a loyal fan of the char

Nam Heong Ipoh @ My Town, Cheras

If you have been a “foodie tourist” in Ipoh, Nam Heong would have been a perennial stop-over on your tour list. The rag tag team plus the cow boy team from outstation were already hooked on their food after our own “foodie tour” of Ipoh, and we were happy to find that Nam Heong had opened a branch in our hood. But as with all franchises, does the food match the lofty standards of THE original Nam Heong, Ipoh? Lets have a look. In terms of ambience, it is pretty good, a definite winner over the original Nam Heong. But here you have to do your own ordering using an ipad available at each table. This took some getting use to and would cause problems for those who are less technology savvy. Though the normal menus were still available on the table.   We ordered all the signature dishes. First-up came the signature chicken hor fun. In terms of taste yes ! it matches the original Nam Heong Ipoh. But what sets this hor fun apart from the rest is the reddish oil made from the
