On a bright Saturday morning, the rag tag team decided to head out to Bangsar Shopping Centre for some dim sum. Initially,
we intended to go to Ming Room, but in a spur of the moment, decided to try
something we have not tried before. We did NOT regret that decision. For the
quality of dim sum in Grand Imperial turned out to be quite splendid.
Being a loyal fan of Tim Ho
Wan’s baked BBQ buns, we started of with these, as it was also not common to
find these on a Malaysian dim sum menu. The buns in Grand Imperial had a nice taste to it, but
fell short of the towering standards of Tim Ho Wan’s legendary baked buns, as the crust was a bit too thick and not as crunchy. But
there were still nice.
For the first time I felt
compelled to describe egg tarts as “tender”, but that was exactly how they were.
The egg filling in the centre was so soft to the point of being tender, the
crust was flaky and good but not extraordinary. Still the egg tart was a winner
for me.
Next came the chee cheong fun
(rice roll with bbq pork filling). The silkiness and smoothness of the rice
roll was indescribably, you can literary slurp up the rice rolls. It was that
smooth. Another definite winner for me and also for the grandmother, who
sneakily ate up most of it!
Do not be deceived by this
ordinary looking bowl of porridge. We ordered the “Tang Chai” porridge, which
basically means a hodgepodge of ingredients all put into the porridge. The
porridge was very flavorful, especially with the small strips of ham as one of the
ingredients. This is what the Japanese would call lovely umami! The porridge
itself was also super smooth, not even a grain of rice can be seen.
The fried yam cake and siew
mai from Grand Imperial were both also very good. There were very generous with the siew mai
toppings, as it seemed like it will overflow anytime. Each siew mai also had
quite a large prawn inside it.
On the down side, for the siew
long pau in Grand Imperial, have probably tasted better, as the skin was a bit thick. But each
bite still came with mouthful of soup!
For desserts we ordered the
osmanthus jelly, it was light and refreshing but again fell short of one of the
best osmanthus jelly I have ever tasted, that is from Tim Ho Wan. Short of
taking a flight to Hong Kong, this had just got to do for now.
All prices were between RM 8 –
11 for each dish of dim sum, with exception of larger dishes like the glutinous
rice or noodles that were priced higher. Good dim sum all around except for one or two near misses. But to add we did go back to Grand Imperial a second time to eat their dim sum, some items did not come out as before (for example the egg tart), so there maybe a slight consistency issue.
